This Saturday Chelsea and Liverpool clash at Wembley in the 131st FA Cup final. To celebrate this fantastic footballing occasion, Icons are offering special discounts on personally signed boots from star strikers Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez.

Fernando Torres has endured a difficult time at Chelsea since his £50m transfer from Liverpool in January 2011, but his dramatic solo goal in the dying minutes of Chelsea's Champions League semi-final against Barcelona at Camp Nou has proved a turning point. Playing with newly-found confidence and conviction, Torres smashed a superb hat-trick in the following game against QPR. He is now making a strong case for inclusion in Vicente del Bosque's Spain squad for Euro 2012. Check out his peronally signed Nike Total 90 boot here and grab yourself a fantastic £75 OFF while the offer lasts.

The day before Torres' hat-trick against QPR, Liverpool's Luis Suarez completed one of the finest trebles in Premier League history in a 3-0 defeat of Norwich. The fiery Uruguayan has been a figure of controversy this season, but his performance against Norwich was a reminder of the dazzling skill that has made him one of Europe's most in-demand strikers. Now is your chance to make the most of a fantastic £75 REDUCTION and pick up an Adidas F50 boot personally signed by Suarez himself. Take a look here.

Cup competitions have provided welcome relief for both Chelsea and Liverpool this season. With a historic cup double on the cards for both sides, Saturday’s match promises to be a fiercely contested affair.

Icon Robin van Persie named PFA Player of the Year

Posted by FootballShirtsAuction.co.uk On April - 23 - 2012ADD COMMENTS

Congratulations to Arsenal captain Robin van Persie who has deservedly been named PFA Player of the Year for his scintillating performances this season.

Van Persie has scored a stunning 34 goals in 2011-12 to save Arsenal's season and take them to 3rd in the Premier League. The Dutch master and Gunners captain is now the seventh Icon in a row to win the prestigious award, after John Terry, Steven Gerrard, Cristiano Ronaldo (twice!), Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and last season's winner Gareth Bale.

We are proud to be home to the world's best players, and to have a fantastic, limited-edition range of products adorned with Van Persie's beautiful signature.

We have his trademark adidas boots which you can have framed with either an Arsenal or Holland background photograph. We also have superb photos of him in action for Holland, and one remaining framed photo of him celebrating at the Emirates. To view our full Van Persie range, click here.

Below you can see Robin signing for Icons back in November 2011 . Long may our relationship continue!

Five of the Best: Ghost Goals

Posted by FootballShirtsAuction.co.uk On April - 16 - 2012ADD COMMENTS

Inspired by Juan Mata’s controversial ‘goal’ for Chelsea in their FA Cup semi-final against Spurs on Sunday, we have carefully compiled our top five ghost goals for your viewing pleasure. Is this the end of the line for arguments to keep technology out of football?

                                         Spot the ball

Frank Lampard - England v Germany

World Cup 2010 in South Africa was a truly miserable affair for England, culminating in a humiliating 4-1 thrashing by arch rivals Germany in Bloemfontein. But could things have been different? The watching world thought Frank Lampard had levelled the scores at 2-2 when his deft chip landed a good yard over Manuel Neuer’s goal-line just before half-time, but the Uruguayan officials had other ideas and ruled the goal out. Most rational football fans would tell you that an in-form Germany side would have triumphed regardless, but an equaliser certainly would have made it interesting.

Christian Teffert - Duisberg v Frankfurt

If England felt unlucky in Bloemfontein, imagine how Second Division German side Frankfurt felt after this clanger. Duisburg’s Christian Tiffert’s effort struck the underside of the crossbar before landing a whopping 1.3 meters away from Frankfurt’s goal-line, but despite a clear view of the incident, the linesman signalled to the referee and a goal was given, making it 5-0 to Duisburg. Scorer Tiffert shrugs innocently as Frankfurt’s plans for a late four-goal comeback go out the window.

Freddie Sears – Bristol City v Crystal Palace

Hell hath no fury like a wronged Neil Warnock. You’ll want to turn the sound up for this one, as former Crystal Palace manager Warnock rages at officials who wrongly disallowed a clear goal from striker Freddie Sears in 2009. Sears, on loan from West Ham at the time, beat the goalkeeper from six yards but his shot bounced off the stanchion at the bottom of the net and came back out. Referee Rob Shoebridge failed to spot the goal and Crystal Palace went on to lose the game 0-1. Poor Sears has only managed a single league goal in two-and-a-half years since that day. And I’m pretty sure Neil Warnock is still angry.

Pedro Mendes - Man Utd v Spurs

Sunday’s incident at Wembley was not the first time in recent years that Spurs have found themselves at the centre of goal-line controversy. In 2005, midfielder Pedro Mendes’ speculative effort from the halfway line at Old Trafford was clumsily dropped over the goal-line by Manchester United keeper Roy Carroll. When referee Mark Clattenberg and his linesman fail to award the goal the sheepish expression on Carroll’s face tells you all you need to know.

John Eustace - Watford v Reading

This is perhaps the most bizarre decision of the bunch. When Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt sent a corner into the Watford box in this Championship clash in 2008, Watford defender John Eustace looked to have deflected the ball for another corner. Remarkably, however, linesman Nigel Bannister flagged for an own goal, despite the incident taking place the wrong side of the goalpost. Four yards the wrong side, to be precise. But to the total bemusement of everyone inside the stadium, referee Stuart Atwell gave the goal.

Anymore you would like to add? Let us know on Twitter!

Pep Guardiola: From Boy to Manager

Posted by FootballShirtsAuction.co.uk On March - 27 - 2012ADD COMMENTS

Already home to the world’s best players, we at Icons have now added the world’s best manager, Pep Guardiola, to our ever-expanding roster of stars. The Barcelona boss, one of the most decorated figures in modern football, has signed an exclusive range of photos for Icons. Guardiola, who made his name in Johan Cruyff’s legendary Barcelona ‘Dream Team’ of the 90s, has returned as manager to create a side of his own that looks even better.

Like so many Barcelona legends, Guardiola’s story begins in the confines of La Masía, the old Catalan farmhouse situated near Camp Nou and home to Europe’s most prolific youth academy. Guardiola left his hometown of Santpedor to enrol in 1984 at the age of 13, and began working his way up through the youth system.

Johan Cruyff’s appointment as Barcelona manager in 1988 would prove a seminal moment in Guardiola’s development. In his first week at the club, Cruyff paid an impromptu visit to watch the youth team at Barcelona’s ‘Mini’ stadium. With half-time approaching, the Dutchman wandered over to youth coach Charly Rexach and instructed him to move the gangly Guardiola from right wing to defensive midfield pivot. Guardiola adapted to the unfamiliar role with ease. It was the first of Cruyff’s many innovations, and surely one of his most significant.

Two years later Guardiola was handed his first team debut, and in the 1991-92 season the 20-year-old became a first team regular, playing as pivot in Cruyff’s supreme European Cup and La Liga-winning Dream Team. Guardiola was heralded as one of the world’s brightest young talents, showing maturity and guile way beyond his tender years. As one of few Catalans among established foreign stars such as Michae Laudrup and Hristo Stoichkov, and a sizeable Basque contingent featuring Andoni Zubizarreta and José Mari Bakero, Guardiola became an indispensable member of the side.

In the 11 illustrious seasons that followed his 1990 debut, Guardiola won 16 trophies with Barcelona, including four consecutive La Liga titles between 1990 and 1994. Cruyff left his position as manager in 1996, and Guardiola was named club captain as members of the Dream Team gradually dispersed. More success followed under Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal, but in 2001 - having made 479 appearances for Barcelona and won 47 caps for Spain - Guardiola called time on his glorious career in Catalonia.

Few could have expected Guardiola to better the achievements of his playing career as a manager, but since his instalment at Camp Nou in 2008, that is exactly what he has done. Since winning a historic ‘sextuple’ of trophies in his first season in charge, Guardiola has led Barcelona to win 13 of 16 possible trophies in under four breathtaking years. He is already the most successful manager in the club’s history, having beaten his mentor Cruyff’s record total of 11 major trophies.

The phenomenal talent of one Leo Messi has, of course, been central to the success of Guardiola’s answer to Cruyff’s Dream Team. But Guardiola has instilled a sense of unity and family at Barcelona and nurtured the perfect environment for his team to flourish. A powerful team ethic prevails over the egos and disharmony that soured the latter stages of Frank Rijkaard’s reign. While José Mourinho's Real Madrid may be in pole position to land La Liga title this season, Guardiola has accrued a formidable record in Clásicos, with nine wins and only a single loss in 13 meetings since taking charge.

For his midfield generals and fellow La Masía graduates Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Cesc Fabregas, Guardiola is not just a manager, but a role model and childhood hero. Iniesta, for one, grew up with a poster of Pep next to his bunk. It is through this ludicrously gifted collection of midfielders that Guardiola transmits the footballing principles he grew up with. The dark hair is gone, but the mind remains as sharp as ever, and the vision and inspiration that made him a Barcelona legend in the first place have extended to management seamlessly.

The numbers are staggering. In total, Guardiola has landed 29 trophies in under 15 seasons as a player and manager at Barcelona. He has been the driving force behind arguably the two greatest sides in football history. Barcelona players, directors and fans alike will be hoping to tie him down for years to come. But whether he leaves in ten years or tomorrow, his is a legacy that will never be forgotten.

Andrés Iniesta: The World’s Best Midfielder

Posted by FootballShirtsAuction.co.uk On March - 9 - 2012ADD COMMENTS

This weekend Icons travel to Barcelona for an exclusive signing session with the wonderful Andrés Iniesta. It marks our second meeting with the little Spanish midfield master, having held our first signing together back in April 2011. Iniesta’s remarkable trophy haul for club and country makes him one of the most decorated players on the planet at the age of just 27. But how did a shy, homesick boy from the Spanish countryside blossom into the world’s best midfielder?

After years living in the shadow of his superstar Barcelona teammates, it is only in recent seasons that Iniesta’s understated brilliance has received the recognition it deserves. Unsurprisingly, Leo Messi is the man grabbing the headlines this week for his remarkable five goals against Bayer Leverkusen, but without Iniesta, neither Messi nor Barcelona would be where they are today.

Iniesta grew up in Fuentealbilla, a small village in the province of Albacete in south-eastern Spain. The precocious talent he demonstrated as a boy in Albacete’s youth teams brought him to the attention of scouts, and in 1996, a 12-year-old Iniesta was enrolled at Barcelona’s fabled La Masía youth academy. Leaving home was heart-breaking for ‘Andrésito’, and years later, the midfielder confessed he “cried rivers” the day he was separated from his parents.

Slight, unassuming and pale-skinned due to a pigmentation problem, Iniesta is not in the mould of most modern football stars. But in his formative years at La Masía, his outstanding natural ability quickly caught the attention of numerous senior figures at Barcelona, notably his current manager, Pep Guardiola, club captain at the time. After watching a 14-year-old Iniesta in action for the first time, Guardiola - another graduate of La Masía - famously remarked that he had finally found someone who “reads the game better than me”. Iniesta had won over his childhood hero, a full ten years before he became his coach in 2008.

Iniesta’s rapid development continued, and he was called to train with the first team aged 16. That day, Guardiola turned to his teammate Xavi Hernández - a first team fixture already - and said: “You’re going to retire me, but Iniesta will retire us both.” With outstanding pace, vision, skill, and the ability to use his 5’7 frame to outwit larger opponents, Iniesta has proved to be everything Guardiola predicted. And more.

But rather than ousting Xavi from the Barcelona midfield, it is in tandem that the pair have excelled, at the heart of arguably the greatest club side in history. This time, Guardiola leads from the sidelines. Under his stewardship, Iniesta has been the creative hub of a side that has won 14 trophies in under four seasons, including a historic ‘sextuple’ in 2008-09. For European and World Champions Spain, the Iniesta-Xavi axis has proved equally devastating.

Short, sharp tiki-taka and intelligent movement are the Barcelona way, and Iniesta is its greatest exponent. But it hasn’t always been easy for him to make his voice heard among Barça’s bigger names.  His versatility and willingness to play in any position for the team under former manager Frank Rijkaard meant he was often overlooked in favour of more extrovert personalities. Once a hindrance, however, his unassuming and humble character has now made him the best-liked player on the planet.

Iniesta’s career so far has not been short of highlights, but two moments in particular stand out. For Barcelona, there was his stunning stoppage time winner in the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea in 2009, an unforgettable effort which sent Guardiola’s side on their way to European glory. For Spain, meanwhile, he will never score a more important goal than his extra-time winner in the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands.

Iniesta’s brilliance lies in the apparent ease with which goes about his job. Everything he does on the pitch looks natural, and his virtuosity brings out the very best in his teammates (watch his best assists here). Barcelona manager Guardiola has handed him greater responsibility since taking charge in 2008. The unparalleled success that has followed is no coincidence.

Steven Gerrard: Cup Final Specialist

Posted by FootballShirtsAuction.co.uk On March - 1 - 2012ADD COMMENTS

Since breaking into the Liverpool first team in 1998, Icon Steven Gerrard has made a habit of putting in big performances when it matters. The Liverpool captain has won an impressive seven out of nine major cup finals with Liverpool, including Sunday’s Carling Cup triumph against Cardiff, and scored five crucial goals in the process. As Gerrard continues his attempts to rediscover his best form after a year on the sidelines, we recall his greatest cup final moments.

UEFA Cup final vs Alavés (goal at 1 min 42secs)

Gerrard’s first cup final goal came at the age of 20 in Liverpool’s enthralling 5-4 UEFA Cup triumph against Spanish side Alavés in 2001. Gerrard’s well taken finish from a Michael Own through ball put Liverpool 2-0 up inside 16 minutes, but it was already a distant memory when, six goals later, unfortunate Alavés defender Delfí Geli’s ‘own golden goal’ handed Gerrard and Liverpool victory in the 117th minute.

League Cup final vs Man Utd

This is why Gerrard should never be allowed time and space to shoot from range. David Beckham, of all people, should have known better. In the 2003 League Cup final at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, Beckham, in his last season at Manchester United, dawdles in his attempt to close down Gerrard, allowing his England teammate to release a fierce drive at goal from 25 yards out. Beckham sticks out a leg but it’s too late, he only succeeds in deflecting the ball up and over goalkeeper Fabian Barthez. Gerrard’s opener sent Liverpool on their way to a 2-0 victory, while Beckham was left only a stray boot to the face away from a transfer to Real Madrid.

Champions League final vs AC Milan

Inspiring Liverpool’s legendary second-half comeback in Istanbul in 2005 remains the greatest achievement of Steven Gerrard’s glittering Liverpool career. After a catastrophic opening 45 minutes left Liverpool 0-3 down at half-time, Gerrard took matters into his own hands. This excellent header from John Arne Riise’s cross in the 54th minute (pictured above) set the wheels in motion for one of the most remarkable comebacks in European football history. After the wild celebrations that followed, Gerrard’s fellow goalscorer Vladimir Smicer said: “The cup ended up with Stevie G in his room. His girlfriend wasn’t here, so he had the cup in his bed instead.” He revealed no further details.

FA Cup final vs West Ham

Another unforgettable cup final defined by Steven Gerrard here, as his stunning injury time volley makes it 3-3, sending the 2006 FA Cup final against West Ham to extra time and penalties, where Liverpool again emerged triumphant. “It’s like Istanbul all over again for Liverpool,” says veteran commentator John Motson, as Gerrard wheels away in celebration with, erm, Jan Kromkamp.

League Cup final vs Chelsea

Sorry Liverpool fans, but here’s a rare cup final lapse from Gerrard, as he diverts the ball into his own net in the 2005 League Cup final against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea. Liverpool were beaten 2-3 in extra-time, but, as we all know, Gerrard more than made amends three months later in Istanbul.

Five of the Best: Cristiano Ronaldo Goals

Posted by FootballShirtsAuction.co.uk On February - 23 - 2012ADD COMMENTS

On February 8th Icons held an exclusive signing session with Cristiano Ronaldo. This was our sixth meeting with the Real Madrid superstar, who been signing for Icons since way back in 2005 when he was first establishing himself at Manchester United. Our long-standing relationship means we are the ONLY company he agrees to sign for, and you can see his full range of signed products here. To mark Ronaldo's return to Icons, we bring you five of his best ever goals.

*Remember to open video links in a new tab.

vs Porto

This stunning 40-yard wonder goal in Manchester United’s 2008-09 Champions League quarter-final second leg against Porto proved decisive. United needed a positive result in Porto having drawn 2-2 in the first leg at Old Trafford, and Ronaldo’s moment of devastating spontaneity sent United through to the semi-finals 3-2 on aggregate. “It’s the best goal I’ve ever scored,” beamed Ronaldo. “I’ve just seen the replay and I didn’t realise it was 40 yards out and I hit it at 65mph – wow!”

vs Arsenal (1.06 mins)

Just 20 days later came an equally sensational strike against Arsenal in the semi-final of the same competition.  With United already a goal up at the Emirates, Ronaldo wins a free-kick just under 40 yards from goal on the inside-right channel. After measuring his run-up in trademark fashion, he launches an unstoppable rocket past Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia to send United on their way to the 2008-09 Champions League final. See our photo of this goal, personally signed by Ronaldo, here.

vs Ajax

One criticism often levelled at Ronaldo is that he is selfish, a trait that can frustrate fans and teammates alike. But this perfect counter-attacking goal for Real Madrid in this season’s Champions League is testament to his outstanding teamwork abilities and combination play. Ronaldo is the architect here, combining with Mesut Ozil, Kaka and Karim Benzema at incredible speed before sweeping home the finish himself.

vs Barcelona

Ronaldo is a remarkably complete forward, and combined with the speed, power and box of tricks, is fantastic aerial ability. This winning goal for Real Madrid against Barcelona in the 2010/11 Copa del Rey final is the best exponent of his heading prowess, and yet another example of him delivering a crucial goal in a big game. In the first half of extra-time, Ronaldo meets Ángel di María's cross with a stunning bullet header into the far corner. Perhaps not his greatest goal in a technical sense, but certainly one of his most important.

vs Spain

Ok, so this 'goal' didn't actually stand, but we couldn't resist including it nonetheless. In Portugal's 4-0 mauling of Spain in a friendly in November 2010, Ronaldo looked to have scored a superb individual goal, but as his sublime chipped finish was about to drop over the line, his former Man United teammate Nani headed it in at point-blank range from an offside position. Ronaldo, furious, throws his captain's armband to the ground in anguish. A sheepish Nani later apologised. " After having time to think about it I apologised to Ronaldo," said Nani. "It was a great piece of play and I shouldn't have ruined it."
